Class II: Publishing as a collaborative practice

The class is built on the premise that publishing as a collaborative practice gives a platform for better visibility of diverse and emerging practices, especially in societies lacking in cultural infrastructure. We’ll give a contextual overview of the artistic publishing and its history to connect it to our regional societal and cultural conditions and discuss the book’s possibilities to open up new topics, approach, and explore new interdisciplinary practices in contemporary art and culture.

Ilija Prokopiev and Marija Hristova

Ilija Prokopiev and Marija Hristova are co-founders of PrivatePrint, an independent publishing house and a studio for interdisciplinary research and practices in contemporary art and graphic design from Skopje, North Macedonia.

Ilija Prokopiev is an experienced curator, book editor, and artist specializing in contemporary art with a profound knowledge of artistic theory and practices and a proven track record in leading and curating diverse exhibitions, writing, and collaborating seamlessly with artists, collectors, and institutions. Graduated from the Faculty of Fine Arts in Skopje in 2008, and in 2014 he received MA in Interdisciplinary Cultural Studies at the Institute of Macedonian Literature in Skopje.

Marija Hristova is an experienced editor, cultural practitioner, and writer. Through her formal education in philology and cultural studies she takes the comparative and interdisciplinary approach in her work. Her work experience has provided her with tools and knowledge in guiding artistic projects, organizing cultural events, and taking care of the organizational, managing and administrative aspects of cultural production in the frames of independent and non-institutional culture scene.
