Prishtina 2004. Several years had passed since the end of the Kosovo War. Yet independence, much longed and fought for, seemed a long time coming. There was a growing sense of frustration in the air. People were tired of waiting for statehood, international recognition and self-determination. Could the arts and culture make a difference?
A group of young activists and artists were convinced they could. Led by political activist Albin Kurti and artist and professor Zake Prelvukaj, with Kosovo Action Network (KAN) and Urban FM behind them, they staged a groundbreaking happening in the shopping arcade at the Palace of Youth and Sports. Entitled I kemi 12 orë – kinse art, it challenged artists, activists and the public at large to examine Kosovo’s past and present and to imagine its future.
As part of its Archiving Transition programme, Shtatëmbëdhjetë revisits this pioneering event twenty years on with I kemi edhe 12 orë të tjera. Comprising an exhibition, performances, talks and tours, the programme brings together artworks, archival material and oral histories which document and examine the conceptualisation, realisation and reception of the event. While acknowledging the fragmentary, fragile nature of memory, the programme explores the significance of the happening from today’s perspective – and reiterates its central questions: Where have we come from? Where are we now? Where are we heading from here?
