This exhibition summarises the Artists of Tomorrow Award<\/em> from 2002 to the present. Rather than focusing on the awarded artworks or artists, it focuses on the influence of this award on the development of the art system in Kosovo. Certainly, this award, in addition to other important initiatives (Exit and the establishment of Stacion – Center for Contemporary Art Prishtina), has greatly contributed to the fact that the interest in contemporary art by both artists and audiences in Kosovo has increased. From the outset, the selection committee included representatives from the Kosovo art scene and the international art world.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Over the years, the YVAA program, an international network of awards operating in Eastern, Central, and Southern Europe, became a bright spot in the development of the art system in all these new countries. Interestingly, the initiative came from the “outside”, which means that art institutions from the former Yugoslavia did not have enough awareness, knowledge and financial resources to produce such an award themselves. Having an internal and external view of Kosovo’s contemporary art scene, as provided by the international jury, was important. At a time when Kosovo’s artists were almost completely cut off from the outside world, these foreign art experts came to the country and gave them first-hand information about contemporary art. They also spread positive news about the quality and vitality of the art scene in Kosovo. The same process was used to select representatives for the national pavilion at the Venice Biennale.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Now, Kosovo artists regularly participate in major international exhibitions. For the art scene to function and develop, it is therefore crucial that the art system works effectively with national institutions, artists and private initiatives. This involves establishing a quality education system for all art professions, as well as organised production of art exhibitions and theory. Without a functioning art economy, the art scene cannot hope to succeed in the long term.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The focus of this exhibition is on how the art system can be constructed and developed.
